The Standard for Public Code is an excellent method to make sure it is as easy as possible for people to collaborate on a codebase. While specifically tailored for software with a public purpose, the standard can be helpful for any type of code and software. It can even be useful to check things that are not code if you would like to see collaboration on it.
As one of the co-authors of the standard, and with five years as a codebase steward at the Foundation for Public Code, I have plenty of experience doing assessments towards it.
Would you like an assessment of your codebase? You’ve come to the right place!
Assessment package / offer
We start with an introduction to find the scope of the assessment and for planning. Then I’ll research your codebase and take some initial notes. Together, we’ll go through each requirement and assess the codebase towards them. It’s critical that someone with good product knowledge and someone with good knowledge of the code can join these calls (usually a project manager and a senior developer will be the best choice). After the calls, I write the full assessment for you and you can then publish it wherever you want.
This is included in the package:
- Introduction call: 30 minutes
- Independent research: 4 hours
- 3 assessment calls of 2 hours each
- Deliverable 1: Assessment report
- Deliverable 2: Suggested quick improvements
I am flexible on the calendar time we take for this, but usually, having a week in between the assessment calls is recommended. They are quite intense, and ideas popping up after the sessions are common and valuable to the process.
